Recipe: Bitter Tears

Two thousand and nine started oh so sweet, but finished crushingly bitter - the failed relationship, internal strife, and finally being drugged and robbed left me more than a little melancholy. Cliché as it sounds, the internal world does indeed start expressing itself in the things we do, in the product of our hands. So it's pretty unsurprising that one particularly dreary December evening I decided that mixing Cynar and salt would be a great idea.

Working through my aging bottle of Carpano Antica before it spoiled also seemed like a great idea, along with reversing the role of vermouth by bringing it to the foreground as a base 'spirit'. In the end, an intense low-alcohol cocktail perfect for either a rich meal or crying alone was born. If you don't enjoy bitter or savory drinks, you'll absolutely hate this. If however your self loathing occasionally extends to your palate, you just might like it.

Bitter Tears

2oz Carpano Antica

1oz Cynar

.5oz Lemon juice

1/8tsp Fleur de sel

1. Stir ingredients with large dry cubes to chill while keeping dilution to a minimum.

2. Pour slowly over a large ice cube in a wide coupe.

3. Sprinkle a pinch of fleur de sel on the cube and enjoy watching it burn it's way through the ice.
