Some dastardly illness knocked me down last night and hasn't let me get back up...but that doesn't mean abstaining from cocktails. Oh quite the contrary, it's toddy time.
My mom often tells stories of working for a prominent doctor that would send her home to make hot toddies when she was sick - they feel great on your throat, make sleep easy, and if you're going to be sick you might as well do it boozed.
So write yourself a prescription and follow along for my Snot Toddy (ha!) recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1oz Rye Whiskey (bourbon, rum, or brandy will work too, but the spiciness of the rye works best)
- 3/4oz Grand Marnier (or any other brandy based orange liqueur)
- 1 Cinnamon Stick
- 1/4 juice of a small lemon or lime
Steps:
1. Pour spirits into large ~12oz+ glass
2. Add cinnamon stick and citrus juice
3. Pour hot but not boiling water, stir
4. Stud orange wheel with cloves and drop into drink
5. Let spices infuse into the drink as it cools to sipping temperature and imbibe!
Okay, Snotty One, your recipe is more sophisticated than the one Dr. Meighan shared with me. However, he hailed from Scotland, just the essentials, aye! Granted, your ingredients are making my mouth water! However, you are missing one important ingredient: HONEY!!! ;) Hope you get well soon! Mom

Agreed on the honey, especially for it's throat soothing, cough suppressing and healing qualities. Another awesome addition is a little black tea. I'll pour the hot water through a strainer of decaf Earl Grey to add a bit more depth and complexity.

My usual hot toddy is:
- Brandy
- Plenty of Lemon Juice
- Clover Honey
- Strong Black Tea steeped for ~30sec
Originally I tried the snot toddy with honey, but because the orange liqueur was so sweet already the honey pushed it over the top so I omitted it, but you're right, honey is great when you're sick, especially with any sort of throat bug. I was going for an orange-spice sort of thing here.
...I made a 'Margarita Toddy' that night that was delicious with honey...better than it sounds too!
