Just because I wasn't writing on The Goodist these past couple months, doesn't mean I wasn't slaving away at perfecting a few consumable creations. I'll be posting a few of these over the next week or so to get caught up, starting with The Goodist Bloody Mary...
A friend was coming by for drinks the other night and I was getting tired of G&T's, so I asked her what her favorite drink was while I headed to the liquor store: "Bloody Mary". I was terrified, I'd never made a bloody mary in my life and already knew the endless variations would make this a consuming project considering my personality type.
To make a long story short, I got lucky early on, and after a bit of refining I was able to settle on an easy traditional take on the bloody mary:
1.5oz Hot Monkey Vodka - this is critical, this vodka alone supplies the heat to the cocktail, great local stuff! I keep it in the freezer to help the drink stay extra cold. I tried a few other spicy vodka's, but none of them could match up.
5-8oz Trader Joe's Garden Patch Juice (low sodium) - note that it MUST be low sodium!! The regular (full sodium?) stuff makes the drink taste like bad soup. Adjust amount of juice based on glass size and heat preference, the more the milder
1 good sized dash Worcestershire to taste
Juice from 1 lemon wedge
Plenty of celery seed - this depends on if you're a pulp in your orange juice person - I am
1 twist fresh ground pepper
A pinch of kosher salt or fluer de sel (optional)
2-3 medium Basil leaves - this is optional, but damn if it isn't a revelation! You can put them in whole, shiffanade, or go even smaller if you prefer they don't add too much texture to the drink
1 Good solid ice cube
- Combine ingredients in the serving glass
- Dump into cocktail shaker
- Shake like your very life depends on it, these ingredients don't want to be together and it's your job to force a love connection
- Pour back into serving glass and garnish if you're into that sort of thing, I prefer a fresh green bean
im so happy you are writing again:) soon you will have costa rican rum to review!
